For the Kids Three – New Compilation CD!

Posted on October 2, 2007. Filed under: Blogging the Music, Hip Happenings |

Nettwerk Music Group announced the release of FOR THE KIDS THREE! on October 2, 2007. The highly-anticipated third installment of the popular For The Kids series is a unique collection of classic, contemporary and original children’s songs performed by an eclectic variety of talented musicians, including Barenaked Ladies, Of Montreal, Moby, Mates Of State and Hem. A portion of the proceeds in the US will benefit the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

Nettwerk and VH1 Save The Music initially teamed up in 2002 around the release of the first For The Kids album with a goal of creating a children’s album that would be just as enjoyable for adults as for kids. The response was overwhelming-notes and emails from parents and teachers across the country and fantastic reviews poured in. Nettwerk was inspired by the response and decided to release For The Kids Too in 2004. Three years later, both albums continue to be parent favorites and still end up on “best of” lists.

Over half of the songs on For The Kids Three! are original to the compilation with the exceptions noted by an asterisk. The track listing is as follows:

1. Of Montreal “I Want to Have Fun”picture-2.png
*2. Great Lake Swimmers “See You On the Moon”
3. Over the Rhine “The Poopsmith Song”
4. Rogue Wave “My Little Bird”
5. OAR “Itsy Bitsy Spider”
*6. Barenaked Ladies “The Other Day I Met a Bear”
*7. Dar Williams “The Babysitter Song”
*8. The Sippy Cups “I’m a Believer”
*9. Anathallo “If You’re Happy and You Know it”
10. The Format “Does Your Cat Have a Mustache?”
11. Moby feat. Chrissi Poland “Sleep So Very Long”
*12. Submarines “My Darling Clementine”
*13. Kyle Andrews “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round”
*14. Blitzen Trapper “New Shoes”
15: Piano “Sunny”
16. Mates of State “Jellyman Kelly”
17. Hem “No Hiding”
18. McLars “The Lint Song”
19. Jolie Holland “Pure Imagination”

Buzz about the Cups!

Posted on May 3, 2007. Filed under: Hip Happenings |

marquee.jpgWell, the lines are forming….tickets are becoming scarce! The band’s Earth Day gig at Bimbo’s on the 22nd brought hundreds of families to each show, with lines extending down the block. The band is picking up some steam with the multiple linedowntheblock.jpgshows that they played this spring! Last week they were mentioned in Newsweek Magazine and Life.

The Cups are expanding their base with shows in the Northwest and upcoming appearances at Lollapalooza and NYC this summer!

This week on ABC’s Nightline, clips from their West Hollywood, House of Blues show will air, filmed for a story about Neal Pollack’s book Alternadad(UPDATE:  The Nightline piece will air this Friday!)

Sirius-ly, The Sippy Cups are on!

Posted on March 12, 2007. Filed under: Hip Happenings |

We’re all home sick from school today. The radio’s on. The toys are scattered all over the house. We called in and sang our well wishes to D (our oldest)! While we were waiting to see if they aired our dedication, we heard the Magic Toast!

It turns out that The Cups are in heavy rotation on Sirius Satellite radio, Channel 116 “Kids Stuff.” So far they’ve been playing Magic Toast, Use Your Words, Little House of Jello and Springtime Fantastic. Call in your requests and dedications to 877-33-SIRIUS.

Sing Along!

Magic Toast
Written by: Alison Faith Levy
Good morning, mother
What do you have for me today?
Good morning, mother
What kind of breakfast did you make?
Good morning, child
I’ve got a special something you will like
Good morning child
Before you go out and ride your bike
Something that will make the day seem sunny
Even if the sky is full of clouds
Something that will make it all seem funny
And every tiny sound seem really loud!I call it magic toast
Magic toast
A little jelly ought to do the trick
Magic toast
Magic toast
Raspberry, blackberry
Spread it nice and thick
I call it magic toast
Magic toast
Yummy in your tummy every day

Magic toast
Magic toast
Sweet little treat to send you on your merry way!

You’re so right, mother
This toast has given me a real lift
You’re so right, mother
This toast is such a special gift

I told ya so, child
Mother always knows the thing to do
I told ya so, child
Now let’s go out and blow on our kazoos!

Something that will make the day seem sunny
Even when the sky is full of clouds
Something that will make it all seem funny
And every tiny sound seem really loud!

Cause we’ve had magic toast
Magic toast
A little jelly ought to do the trick
Magic toast
Magic toast
Strawberry, blueberry
Spread it nice and thick
Magic toast
Magic toast
Yummy in your tummy every day
Magic toast
Magic toast
Sweet little treat to send you on your merry way!

Making the News

Posted on March 7, 2007. Filed under: Hip Happenings |

bapeastcover.jpgAs Bay Area residents, our girls RUN to get a copy of Bay Area Parent Magazine from the stand at our swim school. Granted, they usually use it for making collages and scanning to find the ads of our church and schools. But, not this month!

This month, they ran shrieking back shouting, “Sippy Paul, The Sippy Cups! They’re in the magazine! Look, that’s Sippy Alison!”

Bay Area Parent Magazine wrote a terrific article, spotlighting the trends in hip kids’ music. (That’s Paul Godwin and his son Bodhi on the cover.)  The Sippy Cups, The TimeOuts, and Gary Lapow were among their mentions. These hip new bands are also drawing us back into venues that we enjoy, by playing matinees at places like the House of Blues and Bimbo’s 365. In the last decade, kids music really has begun to encompass and engage the entire family. We may recognize a riff, a song, or a subtle joke in the stage performance that is targeting us. But, deeper than that, we’re connecting with our kids through music that we can still enjoy.

Almost better than our first concert was listening to the band after we got home, hairbrushes and wooden spoons as our microphones screaming “I’m drinking from the sky!” Now, our girls have regular Saturday concerts on our landing to sing “Magic Toast” in their best sequined attire.
